The Habitat for Humanity-Powhatan ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement and resale store with a charitable mission. It offers new and gently used furniture, appliances, building materials, and more—all at a fraction of retail prices, typically saving shoppers 40 to 90%.

Pricing with Purpose

The ReStore team approaches pricing with a clear priority: the ReStore serves as a vital fundraising arm of the affiliate, generating essential revenue to support the mission of repairing and building homes, while strengthening communities. “Pricing can be a challenge, requiring a careful balance between honoring donor generosity, maximizing fundraising impact, and meeting customer needs,” said Erin Woods, ReStore manager.

How Pricing Works

• Condition matters: New or like-new items are typically priced at 40% of current retail. Worn or older items are offered at an even deeper discount.

• Inventory influences price: The number of items in stock can impact pricing.

• Progressive discounts: Color-coded price tags are reduced every two weeks, moving from full price to 25%, 50%, and ultimately 75% off. Remaining items are offered on the “Last Call” table for $1 or less, supporting our mission to reduce landfill waste.

• Pop-up sales: Shoppers can also enjoy occasional 50% off pop-up sales (with some exclusions).

Honoring Donors

“We often receive donations due to life events—downsizing, estate clean-outs, or simply cleaning out the attic,” Woods said. "Many of these items are sentimental and come with memories—memories that hold value that money can’t measure.” The ReStore team strives to ensure that every donor’s contribution is valued and reflects their support of our mission.
