For nearly 10 years, Kathy Adams has delivered meals to  Powhatan’s homebound. Thursday is her route day, making seven stops for nine residents. 

In September, Adams noticed that one resident was coming outside to meet her at the end of a long wooden wheelchair ramp. That was because she didn’t want Adams to step where boards had rotted out and recently given way. 

Adams was aware of Habitat’s Critical Repair Program, so she asked if she could call on her behalf. In two weeks, Habitat’s  volunteers repaired the ramp. 

“The whole purpose [of Meals on Wheels] is to make sure they are OK, that they don’t need anything,” says Adams, who has had three clients assisted by Habitat. “[This client] has been so much happier since the repair.”

For another client, she helped resolve an issue with his gas company. “It was as simple as placing a call for him while I was there and knowing how to access customer service through their phone system. …It’s all about problem solving — helping them live as safely and comfortably as possible.”
